Loading for the Road

Lifting Aid, Not First Aid
You want all your possessions to make the move in good condition, including your body. So if you have lots to move or heavier items, consider renting a dolly. This extra set of wheels really helps along the loading process. It saves your strength, too.

Also remember to use safe lifting techniques when picking up boxes and furniture. Lift with your legs, not your back. And don't hesitate to ask for help when your limits are being tested.

Cartons Have Limits Too
We don't recommend testing the limits of your strength or your packing cartons. Refer to this listing of normally safe capacities for various carton sizes to avoid an unfortunate "box blowout.

Carton Size Weight Capacity Ideal For Items Like
1.5 cubic ft. 50-70 lbs. books, record albums
3.0 cubic ft. 35-50 lbs. linens, clothing
4.5 cubic ft. 10-25 lbs. Pillows, board games
5.2 cubic ft. 75-100 lbs. Lamps, dishes, breakables
6.0 cubic ft 10-15 lbs. Large pillows, down comforters

Make a Master Plan
Before you begin loading, plan to build a series of vertical walls or tiers within your container or trailer. This master plan maximizes space efficiency and minimizes shipfting during transit. As you're building each tier, keep the following in mind:

  • Heavy items (i.e. appliances, sofas, dresses) belong on the bottom of each tier, while lighter or fragile items go on the top.
  • Load furniture in the beginning of the loading process, and place items such as tables and sofas on end instead of upright.
  • In each tier, fill all spaces between large items with smaller ones. For example: pack cartons, chairs or toys between the legs of furniture.
  • Be generous when padding fragile items and furniture, and remember not to use tape on finished surfaces.

Prohibited Items
Items in the list below are either illegal to ship or potentially dangerous, or both. Please do not include them in your shipment.

Aerosol cans, Ammunition, Cleaning chemicals, Fuels/Oils, Insecticides, Liquid Bleach, Loaded firearms, Matches/candles, Paint thinners, Paints or varnishes, Perishable goods, Pets, Propane tanks
