OUR
COMPANY'S HISTORY
Lawrence
Transfer and Storage Corporation was founded in Roanoke, Virginia in
1932 by Weldon T. Lawrence, Sr. In 1942, Lawrence Transfer and Storage
joined the United Van Lines family to secure loads for its fleet of
furniture vans.
Weldon T. Lawrence, Jr. succeeded
his father as President in 1950 and vigorously set out to establish
the Roanoke based operation as one of the leading moving and storage
companies in the Eastern United States. In 1968 Lawrence purchased Powell
Transfer and Storage and in 1970 purchased Boward Moving and Storage.
In November 1972 construction of an office and warehouse in Waynesboro,Virginia
consolidated the Powell and Boward offices. This facility, built on
10 acres, consist of a 50,000 square foot warehouse and 2000 square
foot office space.
In July 1976, Lawrence acquired
certain assets of Central Carolina Bounded warehouse, and commenced
operation of 5000 square foot of leased space in Durham, North Carolina.
In early 1977, the operation was moved to a 21,000 square foot building
near the Raleigh/Durham Airport. In 1979, a second warehouse of 86,000
square feet was added and the recent addition of a third building brings
the total space available to 116,400 square feet on 15 acres. In May
1983, operations were expanded once again to a location near the junction
of I-85 and I-77 in Charlotte, North Carolina. The 24,000 square foot
facility is an ideal location to provide palletized storage and professional
service in Western North Carolina and Northern Georgia.
In December 1985, Lawrence
purchased facilities in Winston/Salem and Greensboro from another United
Van Lines agent. On January 1, 1986 the company name was changed to
Lawrence Transportation Systems, Inc. to better express our overall
ability to meet the public's transportation needs. LTS now had an established
freight department and an impressive fleet of equipment to cover all
moving needs. In February 1990 the Winston-Salem and Greensboro facilities
were consolidated into a new 50,000 square foot building which includes
a vault for our Data Management Center. Also the Charlotte operation
was moved to a new 50,000 square foot warehouse which also includes
a vault for climate control storage.
On September 1, 1991 Lawrence
purchased Hopkins Transfer and Storage. Located in Hannahan, South Carolina,
a suburb of Charleston this 50,000 square foot warehouse and office
facility once again increased Lawrence's service area. Weldon S. "Chip" Lawrence took over for his father in September 1992 as President with
Weldon T. Lawrence, Jr. remaining as active Chairman.
Lawrence is now one of the
largest moving and storage operations in the United States holding interstate
authority in 48 states and the District of Columbia. The financial condition
is exceptionally strong as evidenced by Dunn and Bradstreet rating of
4A1.
Lawrence continues to maintain
its affiliation with United Van Lines and recently honored as one of
its Top Producers.
